Seekonk Speedway D.A.V. Championship weekend is here! As the 2024 weekly racing season closes this weekend, the 2024 champions will be crowned in all nine Seekonk divisions, starting on Fast Friday and ending with NASCAR Saturday. Here are a few things to keep in mind going into the weekend…. FINAL FOUR The Final Four drivers in each division earned their spot in the championship race through what ended up being two Sunoco Drive For The Cup playoff events. Mother Nature impacted the third playoff race, cancelling the action. A playoff points format was used. At the end of August, the top six drivers in the championship standings advanced to the playoffs. The leader of the standings at that point was awarded 3 bonus points, everyone else started with 0. Points were given at the end of the two playoff feature events with 6 going to the highest finishing playoff car, 5 to the next, 4 to the next, etc. At the end of the three weeks (rain cancelled week 3) the highest four playoff point totals advanced into the Final Four. If there was a tie for the Final Four position, the driver who was highest in the whole season points total advanced into the Final Four. In the feature racing on D.A.V. Championship weekend, whoever finishes ahead of the other three in the race will become their respective division champion. SPECIAL NASCAR SATURDAY FINAL FOUR TIME TRIAL KICKS OFF THE SHOW On NASCAR Saturday, the Final Four contenders will kick-off the night by running one-by-one time trials. Only the Final Four drivers will time trial. The order in which they time trial from fastest to slowest will be the order in which they start the feature race. In order for a driver to start in their spot they earned, they must qualify inside the handicap through heat races. Similarly, if a driver misses the handicap in the heat race, they will start wherever they fall in line based on their heat race finish. The NASCAR Saturday time trial will take place at the start of the program at 6 p.m., followed by all heat races and feature action. LAP COUNTS The lap counts for feature racing for D.A.V. Championship weekend are higher. On Fast Friday, both Bandolero divisions will still run 15 laps. However, the Nick’s Pit Stop Legends Cars, Helger’s Pure Stocks and Sport 4 divisions will run 30 lap feature races. On NASCAR Saturday, the Pro Stocks will run 50 laps, while the Late Models will run 40, and the Helger’s Sportsman and Chaz’s Auto Body Sport Trucks will run 35 lap events. WALL OF FAME CEREMONY SET FOR SATURDAY Radical Rick Martin, who is racing for a third straight Sport Truck title this season, Skid Sorterup and current track announcer Kevin Boucher will be enshrined onto Seekonk Speedway Wall of Fame this Saturday night, September 28, on D.A.V. championship night. The induction ceremony will begin at 5:15 p.m., leading right into the Final Four time trial and qualifying heat races at 6 p.m. With 50 years of competition, Rick has been to Victory Lane over 110 times at Seekonk Speedway, along with 7 championships as a driver, with one more as a car owner. Over the time of his career, Rick has been one of the most exciting competitors to compete. From the first time he raced in 1975, his fan base started to grow. Today, they continue to be among the most loyal at the speedway. His first win came on May 12, 1979 in the Late Model division, his first of two on the season. From there, he moved into the Pro Stocks in 1980, picking up his first win in ‘82, on the final night of points competition. While the winning continued through the decade, it wasn’t until 1991 that he picked up his first championship, driving for Ray Manfredo and Dan Sweeney. He picked up his second Pro Stock title in 1996, and followed that up in ‘98 and ‘99, driving for Gil Lopes. In 2000, he competed against his own car, and watched Fred Astle Jr. pick up the championship over himself. Over the next several years, Rick would travel the Northeast, competing with the now defunct North East Pro Stock Association and then with the Pro All Stars Series, winning at tracks like White Mountain Motorsports Park and Riverside Speedway in Groveton, New Hampshire. Whenever his schedule allowed, he would return to his home track and put on a show for the fans. Later in the decade, he returned to weekly competition, coming back in the Sport Trucks, and returning to his winning ways. In 2010, he picked up the Truck title, his first of three titles, including back to back in 2022 and 2023. In August of 2021, Rick picked up his 100th career win at Seekonk, in a tight battle, edging out Tom Scully Jr. Since then, he has added another dozen wins at Seekonk. In the early 1940s, even before Seekonk Speedway was built, Skid Sorterup spent time with D. Anthony Venditti. Together, with Rusty Rushton, Anthony made his dream a reality. Anthony would use them both for a sounding board, but more importantly, they were by his side each step of the way. When the speedway was opened in 1946, Skid made sure he was there to support his friend. He competed briefly, but it was as a car owner that he found more success. When the speedway transitioned from the open cockpit midgets to the jalopies of the early 50’s, Skid was running his car with drivers such as Don Hall behind the wheel. Fords were at the forefront, and his was one of the quickest around the ¼ oval. But he wanted more. The Fords at the time were running a single front axle beam. Skid had an idea. He built a Ford coach with an independent front suspension. After a couple of races, and some adjustments and tweaks, he found his coach among the best cars. He was the first to try the independent front suspension when everyone else was utilizing the single front axle setup. It was that type of innovation, and his close ties with D Anthony, that helped set him apart from his peers. A mechanic by trade, his innovations and ideas over the years made him one of the early pioneers of the sport outside of the cockpit. His devotion to the sport and the speedway made his name legendary at Seekonk. For over 40 years, Kevin Boucher has been part of the family at Seekonk Speedway. From his first job as a runner for lineups to today, Saturday’s have been spent at The Action Track of the East. As a young fan, and the son of championship car owner Ernie Boucher, the passion has overflowed since the early days. He has worked in various forms through his youth. Selling programs in his early teens, to working on the wrecker crew for several years, working in the novelty stand, and then into the announcers booth. In addition, Kevin has been Race Director and Pit Steward, giving him an insight into the behind the scenes part of race night, helping him bring that insight to his style of announcing. He was behind the Wall of Fame from the beginning, honoring the men and women who built the foundation of the Seekonk Speedway. He was part of the 60 Years of Stars that celebrated the 60th anniversary of the track in 2005. For 30 years, he has been the man on the mic, entertaining the fans with his conversationalist style. His knowledge of the history of the speedway and its competitors and teams has been a big part of his style, making sure they aren’t forgotten. His relationships with the fans and the teams are what continues to drive him to putting his heart into his job each week. WTF RACE ON FAST FRIDAY At the end of the regularly scheduled program on Friday night, the Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (WTF) race returns, set for 30 laps. The WTF race, powered by Gerry’s General Maintenance and Spring Villa Memory Care, gives Helger’s Pure Stock competitors the chance to have a NASCAR Saturday or INEX Legends Cars competitor drive their car for a special, fun event. This race continues to grow each year. Last year, Gerry DeGasparre Jr., Charlie Rose and Fred Astle - three championship names that need no introduction - battled for the win. This fun event will conclude the Fast Friday season and the roster for the race is already filling up. DeGasparre, Rose and Astle will all be back in competition. Names like former track champions Mike Brightman, Kyle Casper and others are on the roster sheet. RAIN DATES In the event Mother Nature doesn’t play nice on championship weekend, rain dates of October 4 (Fast Friday) and October 5 (NASCAR Saturday) are in place. If both this weekend and the rain dates were to rain out, the season is over. The champion would be the highest of the Final Four drivers in the overall Seekonk season point standings to that point. Seekonk Speedway D.A.V. Championship weekend takes place on Friday, September 27 and Saturday, September 28. For tickets and more information on the event, fans can visit SeekonkSpeedway.com - specifically the race day info page - for schedules and more. After a long season of racing across both Fast Friday and NASCAR Saturday, Seekonk Speedway will crown 2024 champions this weekend at the Action Track of the East. D.A.V. Championship weekend will take place September 27-28, with nine drivers set to be enshrined as track champions. Each of the nine divisions has a “Final Four” in the Sunoco Drive For The Cup. The driver who finishes the highest in the feature event this week compared to the other three wins the championship. The Final Four contenders include a mix of former track champions, veterans and some rising drivers looking to etch their name into track history. Fast Friday championship night begins at 7 p.m., while NASCAR Saturday championship night begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are available online for both nights in advance by visiting SeekonkSpeedway.com. Pro Stock Final Four: Dylan Estrella, Bobby Pelland III, Vinnie Arrenegado, Mike Brightman With 11 playoff points after the first two weeks, Dylan Estrella leads the Pro Stock Final Four. The Everett’s Auto Parts Racing driver of the No. 46 stormed to the front of the pack often throughout the season, visiting Victory Lane multiple times and always being a threat for the podium. Bobby Pelland III is another former Late Model champion looking to add a Pro Stock title to his resume. Pelland has multiple victories this season and always finds himself around the podium at the end of the night. After making the Final Four last year and coming up just short, Pelland looks to rebound and seal the deal this year. Vinnie Arrenegado is one driver who has put together a season filled with second-place finishes. To be exact, Arrenegado finished second SEVEN times. He will lock up the Rookie of the Year award in the Pro Stocks, but the former Late Model champion wants Pro Stock title gold. And no one can count out Mike Brightman either. Another Final Four run for him will come down to the wire, with Brightman also looking to add to a previous Late Model Seekonk title. Brightman ended the regular season with his first victory of the season and seems ready to chase the crown. The Pro Stock championship event is 50 laps. Late Model Final Four: Charlie Rose, Jacob “Rowdy” Burns, Chase Belcher, Luke Lebrun Burns, the defending Fast Friday Legends Cars champion, also made that Final Four again this year. He will have a chance to win two track titles, on two different nights, on championship weekend. His Late Model season specifically includes five feature wins. The most veteran driver of the bunch, Charlie Rose enters the Final Four. Rose has also been among the fastest cars all year, winning multiple times. There have been a few “classic” battles between Rose and Burns, and it wouldn’t surprise anyone if the two of them are slugging it out for the crown. Chase Belcher, who is no stranger to the Final Four, has put together a quiet playoff run. He hasn’t had the speed he’s been looking for all year, but would love nothing more than to put a great race together and come away with the championship crown. And Luke Lebrun, another driver who has been through a season filled with ups and downs, also is in the Final Four. With victories to his credit this season, Lebrun will look to use some of his experience to be there when it matters in the final laps of the championship event. The Late Model championship event is 40 laps. Helger’s Sportsman Final Four: Colby Lambert, Adam Pettey, Doug Benoit, Scott Serydynski Jr. The Helger’s Sportsman Final Four is wide open, but they will have to go through the dominant car all year if they want to win the championship. Colby Lambert put together one of the most consistent seasons in the history of the Sportsman, dominating along with the way with consistency and also earning the most playoff points of anyone at Seekonk Speedway. Pettey, who had a dominant year in 2023 but came away just short of the title, looks to get what he feels like is his this season. He’s shown he can win and win often, and it may take a win to seal up the title. He’s joined by Benoit, a former Fast Friday Pure Stock champion, just like Lambert. Both of these drivers have moved up to the Sportsman and now have a shot at the title. Benoit had a rough summer with mechanical gremlins, but seems to have figured them out just at the right time to make a run. And, how about Serydynski, joining the party? Another driver who’s had a season filled with ups and downs, Serydynski has made it to this point with a shot to hoist the championship trophy. The Helger’s Sportsman championship event is 35 laps. Chaz’s Auto Body Sport Truck Final Four: Rick Martin, Jake Vanada, Mike Duarte, Tim Bolger Jr. Martin certainly leads the list of favorites. He’s won the last two Sport Truck titles and looks to add a third straight in 2024, in his 50th season of racing. Martin is the most veteran of this group and most veteran of all drivers at Seekonk Speedway. He’s been around, and won the title in his format the last two years. Duarte won the bonus points for the regular season, leading the charge at the end of the August. He hasn’t had a fantastic start to the playoffs, but all it will take is one race for him to hold his second Sport Truck title. Vanada may look like a darkhorse going into it, but he may like it that way. The Everett’s Auto Parts driver certainly didn’t have the win count he wanted this year, but he’s got a shot to win the title - and he’s going to be a major threat to finish it off. And Bolger, maybe the surprise of the year in the Sport Trucks, has his own opportunity to win. Bolger won the Everett’s Auto Parts Triple Crown title this year in a similar format and also has multiple wins, so look out for him. The championship event for the Chaz’s Auto Body Sport Trucks is set for 35 laps. Nick’s Pit Stop Legends Cars Final Four: Jacob “Rowdy” Burns, Richie Helger Jr., Chase Silvia, Mason Tessier
Burns is the defending Legends Cars champion. In a year filled with ups and downs, Burns has three Legends Cars wins and constant top-five finishes. He will be a major threat to capture a second straight championship. Chase Silvia earned the most playoff points of anyone in the first two weeks, with 11. He did that with a victory in the first race and a second-place finish in round two. The driver of the No. 17 seems to have caught fire in the second half of the season, finishing on the podium in four of the final six races, including winning twice. Richie Helger Jr. enters the Final Four with two wins of his own. He made the Final Four in the Legends Cars last year, so has some experience to lean back on. With consistent speed throughout the whole year, Helger will be a threat to capture the crown. And Tessier, the consistent one, enters with optimism. It’s likely it will take a win or at least a podium run to win the championship. Tessier has no wins and just two podium finishes this year, but would pick no better time to get to the front of the field. The Nick’s Pit Stop Legends Cars championship event is 30 laps. Helger’s Pure Stocks Final Four: Mike Henriques, Brent Robidoux, Danny Massa, Ethan Souza Robidoux leads the overall season point standings, coming off an impressive season that will earn him the Rookie of the Year award. One year after moving up from the Bandolero class, Robidoux has been to Victory Lane and been consistently near the front of the field in his debut year. Henriques has been similarly consistent up at the front. He’s never won a championship, but is certainly one of the more polished veterans in the division. Ethan Souza has quietly put together a consistent season himself. In the last nine races, Souza hasn’t finished outside the top-five. He has one victory on the season, showing he can lead the class. If he wants to win the title, he may have to lead the class again. Massa, another polished veteran of the division, had a tough start, but has turned it around in a big way. In his last seven events, Massa has two victories and four podium runs to go along with them. His experience should help him be in contention to capture the crown. Seekonk Grand Prix Bandolero Outlaw Final Four: Bryson Robidoux, Brody Wakefield, Nick Uhrig Jr., Parker Davis The Final Four in the Seekonk Grand Prix Bandolero Outlaw field includes the regular season points leader, a driver rolling into it hot and two speedy competitors looking to earn the title. With victories in the first two Sunoco Drive For The Cup playoff events, Parker Davis leads the charge. Davis has four wins this season, and won the championship in this style format last year in the Bandits. His move up to the Outlaws has shown continued success. Robidoux led the points at the end of the regular season, entering the playoffs with three bonus points. Robidoux also has four wins this season, showing consistent speed throughout the year to go along with nine podium finishes. Wakefield had quite the impressive start to the season, with two wins and podium finishes in the first four events. Since then, he may have cooled off a smidge, but he’s still found himself on the podium often. With two wins on the season, Wakefield would love to end his title run with one more victory. Uhrig, no stranger to the Final Four in this championship format in a Bandolero, he does have experience competing for the title on championship night. After a season filled with ups and downs, he may be considered the darkhorse entering the Outlaw Final Four, but will be a threat. Sport 4 Final Four: Richie Johnson, Matt Pion, Tyler Duhancik, Justin Leduc Although Leduc had an up and down start to the season, he’s caught fire in the second half. He’s been inside the podium in seven of nine events heading down the stretch run, including three feature wins. Leduc has been the fastest car in the track of late, and will roll into the Final Four with plenty of momentum. Joining him, Richie Johnson has been a master of consistency in the second half of the season. In his last seven events, Johnson has top-five finishes in all of them. Although he hasn’t won yet, Johnson enters the Final Four looking to pounce. There would be no better time to win. Pion was on top at the end of the regular season, earning three bonus points towards the playoffs. Using those to his advantage after a tough first week of the playoffs, Pion enters the Final Four looking to seal up the championship. He has two wins on the season. Duhancik had a rough and tumble last time out, wrecking in practice and having to use a borrowed ride for the main event. There have been races this year that Duhancik looked like the dominant force in the division. Seekonk Grand Prix Bandolero Bandit Final Four: Luka Dib, David Bernier, Mason Silva, Jase Chaber Dib, Bernier and Silva have been the class of the field all year. Driving to multiple feature wins, Dib is on a roll entering the Final Four, coming into it with three straight wins and victories in four out of the last six events. Bernier has been on the podium in all but one event this season and has four wins of his own. Silva, driving the No. 31, has two victories along with 11 podium finishes. Chaber on the other hand hasn’t won, but has been consistently inside the top-five. He has finished fifth or better in all of the Bandolero Bandit races this season, showing his drive to be at the front. Although he’s the underdog entering the Final Four battle, can he come out on top? And if he doesn’t, which one of the three Bandolero Bandit powerhouses ends the season on a high note? Seekonk Speedway D.A.V. Championship weekend takes place on Friday, September 27 and Saturday, September 28. The Final Four contenders in the Nick’s Pit Stop Legends Cars include Chase Silvia, Jacob “Rowdy” Burns, Richie Helger Jr. and Mason Tessier. Also making the Final Four on NASCAR Saturday in the Late Models, Burns will have a chance to double-down and win two titles in the same season. In a year filled with ups and downs, Burns has three Legends Cars wins and constant top-five finishes. He will be a major threat to capture a second straight championship on Fast Friday. It’s likely it will take a win or at least a podium run to win the championship. Tessier has no wins and just two podium finishes this year, but would pick no better time to get to the front of the field. He’s a veteran of the division. In the Legends Cars division, there was a tie for the final spot, with Tessier and Brenden LaBelle both sitting at five playoff points. The tiebreaker was broken with who was highest in the overall season points total - Tessier. The Final Four championship event for the Nick’s Pit Stop Legends Cars division will take place on D.A.V. Championship weekend on Friday, September 27. Racing begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are available online at SeekonkSpeedway.com. |
