Seekonk Speedway is saddened to share the news that legendary short-track New England racer Carl “Bugsy” Stevens has passed away. The four-time Seekonk Speedway champion will be missed by all in the community. Driving his first race in 1957, Bugsy was born for auto racing. He rolled into the mid-1960s teaming with legendary car owner Lenny Boehler to drive the historic No. 3 “Ole Blue” machine and they had immediate success — winning championships and countless races. Stevens won titles at Seekonk Speedway, Thompson Speedway, Stafford Motor Speedway and many other tracks in New England. Not only was Stevens a Modified standout, he also competed in the NASCAR Cup Series back in 1970 - competing in three events in that season, scoring a best finish of sixth in what is now the Coca-Cola 600. Bugsy was also a competitor on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour once the modern era started in 1985, competing in three years of competition and 45 starts with multiple top-five finishes. Stevens not only drove for Boehler, but also historic car owner Joe Brady, winning championships at Westboro Speedway and Seekonk. Perhaps even more important than his driving ability, Bugsy’s smile and personality made him a fan favorite. Stevens is a member of the New England Auto Racers Hall of Fame (Class of 1998) and the Seekonk Speedway Wall of Fame. One of Seekonk’s all-time most popular drivers, Bugsy won three NASCAR National Modified championships. If there was ever a driver that could capture the eyes and hearts of the youth, Bugsy was the one.
